Finding content ideas for a website is easy when you first start out. You can look at what’s working for competitors, see what search terms come up in ahrefs’s keyword explorer and so on.
However, there will come a point after a few years when it’ll seem like you’ve covered everything.
But that’s almost never the case!
Did you know there’s a way for you to see the search terms Google thinks you’re relevant for, even if you’re not getting traffic from it?
And if you did, do you know how to use that data to plan out future content marketing ideas?
Let’s jump right into how to do it…
Google Search Console
The first step is to log into Google Search Console and set your date filter to 16 months.
We then want to look through our queries and find content marketing opportunities.
A keyword opportunity usually looks like this:
- The query is relevant to your website
- It hasn’t been targeted by a page in the past
- It has high impressions and no clicks.
Now because there’s going to be tons of data here, we really need to filter down to speed up the process.
So let’s filter using informational keyword modifiers.
Here Are Some Good Informational Keyword Modifiers:
- best
- top
- are
- can
- how
- what
- when
- where
- which
- who
- why
- will
- for
- is
- with
- without
- or
- vs
Let’s start with the informational keyword modifier “best”.
Click on the “+ NEW” filter button and click “Query”. You then need to write “best” in the keyword input field, like so:
You now need to look through for any queries that are relevant to your website, that you haven’t targeted with another page and that get a decent amount of impressions.
Place all of these keywords in a Google (or Excel) spreadsheet.
You also need to make note of the pages that were getting impressions for the keyword so we can internally link from those once our new content is live.
To see which page is getting the impressions for each keyword, simply click on the query in question and then select the “PAGES” tab, like this:
And that’s all there is to it!
The fact that you’re getting impressions for these keywords you’ve never targeted means two things:
- Google thinks you’re relevant
- It’s possible to rank for
And the best part? It’s completely scaleable.
Build out all the content ideas you’ve found in this step and then come back in a month or so’s time to find even more ideas Google’s generated for your website.
Learn From This Example
I found our website gets impressions for “best cms for seo 2020”.
It’s completely relevant to our website.
It’s getting a good amount of impressions (considering the page that’s getting impressions is new)
And I have never targeted the keyword with another page before.
I learned it was this page: https://ontopmarketing.agency/rank-joomla-in-google/ that’s bringing in the majority of the impressions for the keyword – so I know Google must think that page has some relevancy to the keyword “best cms for seo 2020”.
So I’ve now built the Best CMS For SEO 2020 blog here. And internally linked it from the “Can You Rank Joomla In Google” blog.
