Getting Google reviews is easy when you give customers this handout. But how does it get more customers to leave a review without offering a costly incentive?

Well the truth is, even though it works like magic, what it really relies on is psychology.

Here’s a breakdown of why works (or you can watch the video instead):

The Headlines

The headline is direct to the point which ensures people know exactly what’s being asked of them right off the bat. There’s no cutesy nonsense, we want results.

The beginning section of the subheadline suggests you value the customer and want to know what they think of you. This activates the social laws of reciprocity and increases the chances they’ll say something nice about your business in their review.

The second section of the subheadline lets them know there’s a very small time commitment. Which is crucial in the modern world as people’s attention spans are very short and they often feel they are too busy to do anything that doesn’t directly benefit themselves.

The Design

The instructions are designed as steps with a green background to indicate how easy it is to leave the review for your business.

Each step has been broken down fully to show exactly what they’ll see when leaving their review on both mobile and computer to prevent them getting lost or confused. This plays a vital role in the success of the campaign as most customers will feel too embarrassed to ask for help leaving a review online.

The five star graphic is an exact copy of what they would see if they were to select five stars in their Google review. This has been chosen because of a cognitive bias known as social proof tendency, which means that when people aren’t sure how to act in a situation, they’ll copy what other people are doing. By having the five stars selected, we can subtly nod that the correct thing to do is leave a 5-star review.

The Direct Instructions

The line underneath directs them to share a few details about the product or service they received. This will increase the chances they’ll use your keywords and lsi keywords in their review to help you rank higher in Google’s local listings.

The preemptive thank you note at the bottom of the instructions is to again show the customer that you value them and appreciate what they are about to do.

The last paragraph of text has been very carefully written to reduce the chances of an unsatisfied customer leaving a bad review, while increasing the perception of your business’s after sales service. The message is conveyed in a caring manner while instructing the customer to phone your business if they have a complaint, instead of posting it publicly on Google. The obvious solution is not to give the Google review handout to unsatisfied customers, but this line can be really helpful for a moderately unsatisfied customers who may be difficult to read.
